Richard Chew is the inaugural holder of the Bob Allison (Allesee) Endowed Chair in Media in Wayne State University’s Department of Communication. He will be in residence as a visiting faculty member for six weeks during the spring 2011 term.
The 7pm program includes a conversation with Richard Chew preceded by a highlight reel of his work. The program is hosted by the DIA's curator of film and performing arts, Elliot Wilhelm. At 8pm, enjoy a screening of one of the films that influenced Chew's remarkable career: Nothing But a Man (1964) starring Ivan Dixon, Yaphet Kotto and Abbey Lincoln. The evening concludes with a dessert afterglow.
Chew is a renowned editor with a 45 year career in feature films and documentaries. He won Academy Awards for his work on The Redwoods (Best Short Documentary, 1967) and Star Wars (1977). He was nominated for the Academy Award for his work on One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975). He won British BAFTA awards as co-editor on The Conversation (1974) and on Cuckoo’s Nest. His work on Shanghai Noon (2000) was nominated for Best Feature Comedy by American Cinema Editors. Among his other notable films are Goin’ South (1978), Risky Business (1983), Clean and Sober (1988), Singles (1992), Waiting to Exhale (1995), Hope Floats (1998), I Am Sam (2001) and Bobby (2006).
