STUDENT ENTREPRENEURS CAN COMPETE FOR PRIZES TOTALING OVER $10K! - Details to be announced Friday, October 21st!
Students from the Blackstone LaunchPad, Wayne State University’s student entrepreneur program, and other colleges around the Metro Detroit area will showcase their business models at Wayne State’s Get Launched! event, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2011, in the Student Center Ballroom, 5221 Gullen Mall, Detroit.
Wayne State understands that entrepreneurs are very much a part of Detroit’s revitalization. Get Launched! allows today’s students to showcase tomorrow’s next great business model. Their business ideas range from mobile apps and social media technology to retail and automotive engineering, and everything in between.
During the event, the students from the Blackstone LaunchPad programs of Wayne State University and Walsh College with the most innovative business models will have the opportunity to pitch them before a panel of Detroit business leaders, in the BLP Tank (think “Shark Tank” the television show). The panel will include Rishi Jaitly of the Knight Foundation, Hatch Detroit founders Ted Balowski and Nick Gorga, Slow’s Bar-B-Q owner Phil Cooley, and Dan Izzo of BizdomU. The winner receives the prize of seed money in the amount of $5,000, the runner-up will receive $2,500, 3rd place $600 and 4th place $350. Honorable mentions will receive cash awards of $50 each.
An additional contest, Idea Slam, will be open to the entire audience with prizes totaling $500! Teams of five will be given an issue or a challenge (will reveal the day of), they will have 20 minutes to brainstorm and then they will pitch! Winners will be chosen through audience participation via “texting”.
Our keynote speaker will be Josh Linkner, CEO and co-founder of Detroit Venture Partners (DVP), and co-founder ePrize. Josh alongside his DVP partners, Earvin “Magic” Johnson (Magic Johnson Enterprises, former L.A. Laker) and Dan Gilbert (owner Cleveland Cavilers, Quicken Loans, BizdomU), are working to revitalize Detroit through cultivating and investing in technology start-ups.
Our Student Venture Fair will give students the opportunity to interact with student entrepreneurs in the Blackstone LaunchPad program and with other great entrepreneurial resources: WSU Small Business Legal Clinic, BizdomU, KivaDetroit, UHY, Detroit Venture Partners , TechTown, Detroit Micro-Enterprise Fund, and WSU Technology Commercialization.
