Creating a Cultural Prism for African American Children
Research with Meaningful Instructional Implications
The Institute for the Study of the African American Child (ISAAC) announces the second biannual Public Policy Think Tank. The Think Tank will be held online and is free and open to the public. Each attendee is invited to become a member of ISAAC. However, this is a voluntary request. It is not a requirement to attend the Think Tank. Memberships can be obtained on the Home Page of the ISAAC web site by clicking the Become A Member button at any time – before or after the Think Tank. The ISAAC web site address is: www.isaac.wayne.edu.
Go to the ISAAC web site at www.isaac.wayne.edu and download the ISAAC Think Tank Agenda from the Public Policy Think Tank Promo box at the top right on the Home Page. Eleven of the keenest thinkers in the fields of education and sociology will serve as the Think Tank speakers. Each speaker will respond to the Epilogue to the 3rd Edition of Black Children: Their Roots, Culture and Learning Styles (The Johns Hopkins University Press), written by Dr. Janice E. Hale, that will be released in 2013.
This Think Tank is designed to provide teachers with research that they can immediately use in their classrooms to create change for African American children. An important goal is to create a collaboration between scholars and scholar practitioners to bridge the gap between research and practice to enhance the academic achievement of African American children. This Think Tank provides an opportunity for the constituency of ISAAC to work together, even though the participants are located in separate places throughout the world. The Attendees will be able to see the speakers through video feed from their computers. The Attendees will be able to fully participate in the event. They will appear on screen when asking a question or making a comment. They will be able to write comments and dialogue with the presenters in the same way possible when they are in one place.
Following are the steps that each Attendee should take to be certain that their equipment meets the requirements of Microsoft Lync prior to the event. Four Test Meetings will be held beginning on Wednesday, April 11, 2012, so that Attendees can master the process of joining the meeting at their convenience, prior to the real Think Tank on April 28, 2012.
Registration for Test Meeting
Step One:
Register for the Think Tank through the Events Calendar at Wayne State University. Go to http://events.wayne.edu. Click on the ISAAC Public Policy Thank Tank event that is listed. Click RSVP and complete the RSVP form. An invitation to the April 28, 2012 Think Tank (1:00 – 6:00 pm) will be sent to you from that registration list. You will be sent the URL link that will enable you to join the meeting. If you do not register, you will not have the URL for joining the meeting on April 28th. In addition to the URL, you will receive 2 documents that will be attached to the email that you should download and read in preparation for the Think Tank. One is the Epilogue to the Third Edition of Black Children: Their Roots, Culture and Learning Styles, written by Dr. Janice E. Hale. The other is the Conference on Research Directions (CORD) Committee on Collaborative Research report written by Dr. George Johnson and Dr. Lanette Waddell. Please read each document prior to the Think Tank.
Step Two:
You should download the Quick Start Guide for Using Lync 2011 (using the link below) as an Attendee. Please review in advance of the Test Meeting. This document will give you guidance in joining the meeting.

Go to Install Lync 2010 Attendee before joining a meeting. Click on that link.
Follow the prompts to install Lync 2010 Attendee on your computer. Also, be sure that there is a web cam on your PC or laptop. If there is no web cam, you can purchase one for under $20 from Radio Shack. It is very easy to attach. Most laptops have built in web cams.
For additional guidance, there is a video you can view to accomplish the same thing. View the first segment for installing Lync 2010 Attendee. That is the one you should use to avail yourself of all of the features.

Step Three:
Four Test Meetings have been set-up to enable you to download the documents and equipment necessary to attend the real Think Tank. You only need to attend one Test Meeting.

Go to the test meetings at any time during the day or night. Even though the Test Meetings are scheduled for 1 day, they are actually each available for 2 weeks. So, you can join a Test Meeting at any time.
When you join the meeting, Join As Guest.

If you miss the Think Tank, the entire event will be posted on the ISAAC web site at: www.isaac.wayne.edu, following the event. Viewing the event after the fact, of course, will preclude your participation.
