Dr. James Loewen is a sociologist, historian, and the author of several books, including Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong and Sundown Towns: A Hidden Dimension of American Racism. The latter describes how, beginning with Reconstruction, thousands of communities kept out African-Americans or other groups by force, law, or custom. These communities are called "sundown towns" because some posted signs at their city limits warning African-Americans to leave before sundown. Dr. Loewen will discuss the often chilling stories of these towns and why many still exist today in Michigan and other states.
