The keynote speaker is Nathan Garrett, a nationally renowned author and speaker and a trailblazer in the field of public accounting. Despite an outstanding academic and military record, Garrett faced many challenges while trying to break into the accounting industry in the 1950s. He ultimately secured a position in the firm of Richard H. Austin, the first African American in Michigan to earn the CPA designation. Under Austin’s tutelage, Garrett eventually became the fifth African American CPA in the state of Michigan. He later moved back to his hometown of Durham, North Carolina, where he earned a law degree and had a long and illustrious career as a CPA and community leader.
This event is open to all students, alumni and friends of the School of Business Administration. The program begins with professional development workshops and concludes with a keynote lecture and luncheon. Registration is complimentary to all who attend. However, there are a limited number of spaces available.
Workshops: 10 a.m. to Noon
Although the workshops are designed to help students obtain and succeed in accounting careers and will be led by representatives from accounting firms Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Rehmann and UHY, the topics are applicable to any business school students seeking a professional career. Topics will include:
- Walking of campus and into a career - the complete recruitment process - Rehmann
- Developing and leveraging your personal brand - PricewaterhouseCoopers
- The importance of internships - UHY
- Business etiquette and networking for success - Deloitte
