Have you ever been a witness to harassment in the classroom? What about at a party? Have you ever watched what you thought might be violence between a couple in a relationship? What did you do? Did you step in? Did you ignore it? Or did you just simply walk away?
To help raise awareness about some of these issues on Wayne State’s campus and as part of our commitment to the federal Violence Against Women Act (the VAWA mandates that all new students and employees at U.S. colleges and universities must be offered "primary prevention and awareness programs" that promote awareness of rape, acquaintance rape, domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking), Wayne State University will be hosting multiple “No Zebras. No Excuses.” performances on main campus.
A cast from Central Michigan University’s (CMU) No Zebras. No Excuses. performance group will act out a variety of vignettes to address and recognize various forms of sexual assault, intimate partner violence, stalking and harassment. They will ask the audience questions such as: What will you do when it occurs? How would you make a difference?
No Zebras. No Excuses. is the first program of its kind to focus on bystander mentality, addressing the impact of intervention on situations of sexual aggression. It stresses sexual aggression can no longer be ignored, empowering students to stand up, take a stand, and help keep others safe
Every part is performed by members of the nationally recognized group Sexual Aggression Peer Advocates, and each topic is supplemented by current statistical information. In addition to the scenes, educators will give context of the scenes, talk about implications, and how to effectively engage in a pro-social way to end the cycle of aggression.
No Zebras. No Excuses. is facilitated by Steve Thompson, sex crimes profiler and author of No More Fear and Date/Acquaintance Rape: The Crime and Criminal, the most comprehensive profile and behavior pattern of acquaintance rapists.
Only by creating a community of active intervention can we end bystander mentality and reduce incidents of violence and harassment around us. Preliminary evaluation of this program shows significant decrease in participants rape myth acceptance.
No Zebras. No Excuses. Wayne State sponsors include the Provost’s Office, Dean of Students Office (DOSO), Commission on the Status of Women (COSW), Housing & Residential Life, Campus Health Center, Wayne State Police, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Business and Auxiliary Operations, and Not for Sale.
