The Office of the Vice President of Research is pleased to host the Water@Wayne seminar on Thursday, October 25, 2012 at 2:30 p.m. at the Welcome Center Auditorium. Mr. John Bona, senior consultant from Environmental Consulting & Technology, Inc., will be the presenter. Mr. Bona has been working in civil/environmental engineering within southeast Michigan since the early 1970s. He has a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Detroit and a master's degree in urban planning from Wayne State University. He recently worked on numerous water quality monitoring and restoration projects in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and St. Clair counties, including serving as project manager for the Belle Isle habitat restoration projects included in his presentation.
Mr. Bona's presentation, "Addressing the Great Lakes Areas of Concern - One Project at a Time," will provide an overview of the efforts being undertaken to address environmental issues throughout the Great Lakes and the individual projects that collectively make up the solution. The presentation will briefly review the history of Great Lakes Areas of Concern (AOC) and the massive federal program put in place to begin to address their Beneficial Use Impairments (BUI) - the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI). It will then focus on the development of two specific projects that will take a step toward reducing the Loss of Habitat BUI within the Detroit River AOC. The projects will be chronicled from their identification in early AOC planning efforts, through the grant application process, conceptual design, development of plans and specifications, to the construction which is ongoing today.
A reception will follow the presentation in the Welcome Center Lobby (3:30-4:00 p.m.)
