Learn how you can enroll in Honors 4260 – African Democracy Project: Ghana and accompany Wayne State University President Emeritus Irvin D. Reid on a two-week trip to Accra, Ghana in December 2012. While in Greater Accra, students will observe Ghana’s presidential and parliamentary elections and interview a wide spectrum of participants in the construction of Ghanaian democracy.
In preparation for the trip to Ghana, students will study contemporary Ghanaian history and contemporary issues in African politics. Students will have an opportunity to examine the crucial roles of healthcare, education, and religion as well as the traditional status of women in Ghanaians' political dialogue. Other topics of special interest to course participants might also be explored.
This course and foreign study are part of the African Democracy Project, a series of seminar courses designed to give students a richer understanding of politics, society and culture in Africa. The courses examine various elements of democracy in select African nations and challenges students to think about these issues in relation to Metro Detroit. Wayne State University’s African Democracy Project was launched in 2009. Past seminars have visited Mozambique, Botswana and Liberia.
Admission to the course is by application only. Application is open to all students. The information session will provide facts on the application process, application deadlines, costs for the foreign study and other important details.
