Wayne Law 1L Orientation
Tuesday, August 25, 2009 from 2:30 PM to 8:30 PM

Orientation will be held at the Law School at 471 West Palmer Street in Detroit. The following is an overview of the schedule for each day of orientation. You will receive additional information regarding registration and orientation in the coming weeks. Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009
Noon - 2 p.m.: Relax, Relate, Release: A fun health/wellness event to calm 1L jitters (Day Students)
2:30 - 5 p.m.: Legal Writing: Introduction to the Legal System and Legal Writing (Day Students)

Class Discussion:

  • Sources of the law and structure of the court system
  • Development of the law through the common law process
  • Relationship between case law and statutes
  • Citation to provide authority and attribution
  • Exercises 1A and 1B

5 - 6 p.m.: Dean’s Welcome (Day, Combined and Evening Students)
6 - 8:30 p.m.: Legal Writing: Introduction to the Legal System and Legal Writing (Evening Students)

2:30 - 5 p.m.: Legal Writing: Analyzing Legal Authority (Day Students)

Class Discussion:

  • Reading and briefing cases and utilizing the parts of a judicial decision
  • Exercises: 2B and 2F
  • Brief Demelo v. Zompa for Aug. 27 (copy provided in class)

4 – 5 p.m.: Subs, Services & Such: An essential 1L information/resource gathering event (Evening Students)
5 - 6 p.m.: Ethics and Professionalism, State Bar President Edward Pappas (Day, Combined and Evening Students)
6 - 8:30 p.m.: Legal Writing: Analyzing Legal Authority (Evening Students)
