The 16th annual Wayne State University Graduate Student Research Day will take place Sept. 27 on the campus of the School of Medicine and will feature the developer of the human papillomavirus vaccine as the keynote speaker.
Graduate Student Research Day is a daylong event intended to promote interaction among Wayne State University departments and students within the biomedical research fields. In addition, the event serves to increase awareness of research activities performed by Wayne State University graduate students. The event also provides many networking opportunities and produces collaborations among the various School of Medicine departments as well as departments from WSU main campus.
Graduate students who present their work in either oral talks or poster presentations will be judged by volunteer faculty members. Prizes will be awarded to the top speakers in each oral session and the top three presenters in each poster session.
The keynote speaker for the event will be Richard Schlegel, M.D., Ph.D., chair and professor of Pathology at the Georgetown University School of Medicine. Dr. Schlegel also serves as professor of Oncology, Microbiology and Immunology, and Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Dr. Schlegel serves on the editorial board of the journal Virology and serves as a permanent member of the National Institutes of Health Virology study section. His laboratory at Georgetown developed the technology for the human papillomavirus vaccine. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the HPV vaccine for use in 2006.
The event, which is open to the public, will take place will take place in Room 3125 at Scott Hall beginning at 8 a.m. The day’s lineup will include poster and oral presentations by students, culminating with the keynote address by Dr. Schlegel at 4:30 p.m. in the Green Auditorium in Scott Hall.
