Celebrating the Launch of the Jewish Studies Minor

Celebrating the Launch of the Jewish Studies Minor
Tuesday, September 23, 2008 from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM

We are pleased to invite you to a special celebration; the launch of the Jewish Studies Program in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Wayne State University. President Jay Noren and Sara R. Horowitz, Director of the Centre for Jewish Studies at York University and President of the Association for Jewish Studies, will deliver the remarks during the program which starts at 6:00 p.m. in rooms BC.

For many decades, Jewish life and activity has been a highly visible part of campus life. Since its founding in 1988, the Cohn-Haddow Center for Judaic Studies introduced the university and the community to exciting and innovative research and scholarship in Jewish Studies and has contributed to the cultural life of our campus and the Detroit metropolitan area through the performance of Jewish art, music, theatre and dance. In turn, Wayne State's Hillel has a long and honored history of serving Jewish students on campus. Finally, the Wayne State University Press has become internationally renowned for its outstanding publications in the field of Judaica.

Wayne State University now seeks to build upon these accomplishments by establishing a Minor in Jewish Studies. Interdisciplinary in structure and innovative in its approach, the Minor in Jewish Studies will engage students and faculty who are interested in learning about the history, culture and languages of Jewish communities. In a variety of courses in history, literature, philosophy, political science, and the Hebrew language, students at Wayne State University will have an opportunity to learn how Jewish thought has influenced the modern world and how it has been influenced in turn by the societies and cultures in which Jews have lived over the past four thousand years.
