Professor William Velez of the University of Arizona will describe his highly successful efforts to increase the number of mathematics majors at that university.  These grew out of his efforts in the late 1980s to increase the success rate of minorities in first semester calculus.  This event is part of the weekly colloquium series in the Department of Mathematics.  An abstract for the talk can be found at the following URL:
