Wayne State alumnus Ernest Matchulat (BA and MA in Education) passed away on January 21, 2013. A lifelong musician (saxophone and clarinet), Ernie was a 60-year member of the Detroit Federation of Musicians. Long active in the Detroit music scene, he led and performed with his own big band and jazz combos, and was a 25-year member of the Detroit Concert Band. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he performed with the notable 7th Army Symphony in Germany, where he met his beloved wife Anna-Maria. A faculty member at Madonna University and educator for 40 years, he was a band and orchestra director at various schools in the Detroit, Highland Park and Livonia school systems before retiring in 1994.
