DEADPAN (the art of the expressionless)

November 1 – December 7, 2013
Reception: November 1, 2013, 7-10pm
Curated by Ryan Standfest

The term deadpan has its origins in 1920’s American culture, when the word “pan” was slang for “face.” Deadpan therefore was a means to describe an emotionless face. Its contemporary usage has come to define a particular form of comedy in which the method of delivery is straight without letting the viewer in on the joke. This becomes a bit of an intellectual exercise, as the viewer must breach the façade and find the space where the humor lay. In order to achieve a state of deadpan expression, one must actually be expressionless. The opposite of exaggeration, this involves a great deal of restraint as emotions are downplayed to the point of being kept under lock and key.

Rotland Dreadfuls: in praise of the cheap and sensational

November 1 – December 7, 2013
Reception: November 1, 2013, 7-10pm
Edited by Ryan Standfest

Edited by Ryan Standfest and published by ROTLAND PRESS, the ROTLAND DREADFULS series of chapbooks is an homage to the cheaply- produced 19th - century pamphlets known as “Penny Dreadfuls” – so named because the original cost was one penny and they contained stories considered shocking and sensational. The Dreadfuls presents nine of these publications accompanied by an exhibition of drawings produced for their pages,

ROTLAND PRESS is a publisher of printed projects that promote the healthy proliferation of subversive humor— be it black, dark, gallows, satirical or absurdist in intent. We believe humor should be accompanied by a level of discomfort for it to be effective. ROTLAND is a state of mind in which sophisticated cynicism and creative cruelty are necessary. Mockery and wit are tools for survival.
