A professional development seminar for health and other professionals which will focus on pain management and opioid addiction issues in our communities and best practices for screening and treatment for those working in a healthcare setting. Topics will address the age spectrum with opioid use during pregnancy and care of newborns, law enforcement and resources, and quality oversight and management in older adults. The keynote speaker, Dr. Larry Skendzel, will discuss the importance of evidence-based research to encourage a more structured and consistent approach to using opioids when indicated for pain management, while also noting the risks of this medication class and the social problems that follow it when we fail to be mindful in how and when opioids are prescribed.
