Title : Role of mathematical models for Aircraft Assignments at All Nippon Airways


Abstract :

In the airlines operations, fleet assignment models are used to assign the flight legs to different equipment types (such as a Boeing 760, 767, AirBus 320 etc.). The fleet assignments have to satisfy certain operational constraints like coverage, over night stay, airport compatibility etc. Fleet assignments are tactical decisions, and due to changes in the demand and maintenance requirements, an intermediate decision making process is required to capture the demand and maintenance changes before the day of departure for the flights. In this talk, given a set of fleet assignments for the equipment types, I will describe an implementation of a swapper optimization suite (SOS) for the largest airlines in Japan for exchanging the assignments of flight legs among different equipment types. The scale of flight legs and equipment types, complex operational constraints, maintenance requirements and other complex criteria from the planners necessitates the development of a sophisticated mathematical optimization suite to generate swaps for the allotted fleet assignments. The SOS uses optimization models to generate the optimal swaps. The company has adapted the SOS into their information systems to seamlessly incorporate the use of optimization in the decision-making process.
