Event description: As the world sees an increase in the criminalization of homosexuality, so the world see an increase in the number of forcibly displaced SOGI non-conforming individuals.  Join Thomas "TJ" Rogers for a conversation on how Freedom House Detroit not only helps navigate the legal process, but has become a safe space.  Learn about the challenges that remain and how you can help welcome LGBTQ into the broader Detroit community and effect change. TJ Rogers Bio: Thomas "TJ" Rogers is the Development Director at Freedom House Detroit, where he leads the organization’s fundraising efforts, oversees branding and communications, and maintains donor relations. With years of firsthand experience providing direct services to asylum seekers, Rogers works passionately to generate awareness about their plight and build stronger networks of support. In February 2014, Rogers coordinated the visit of Frank Mugisha, Executive Director of Sexual Minorities Uganda, to Detroit to address the realities of being LGBT in Africa, which served as the catalyst to his spearheading the creation of a program for LGBT asylum seekers at Freedom House Detroit. Rogers’ efforts have been profiled in Pride Source, Michigan's LGBT Magazine, and “Color Lines”, and were recognized with an invitation to a roundtable conversation at the UNHCR Washington, DC office about alternatives to detention for LGBT asylum seekers. He is on the Steering Committee of LGBT Freedom and Asylum Network and a proud member of Amnesty International. Rogers also serves as a Board Member of the Mary Turner Center for Advocacy, a neighborhood service center in Detroit, MI.
