“Cell-cell Interactions in the Vasculature Notch Signaling and Beyond”

Abstract

The primary focus of my research laboratory is to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying the development of cardiovascular diseases with a focus on cell-cell interactions and cell-specific gene function. The PI’s lab has investigated the role of vascular endothelial cell-smooth muscle cell interactions in governing cardiovascular development and disease. In particular, we have examined the mechanisms of Notch signaling between endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells that contribute to blood vessel development and stability of the vascular wall. These previous experiments have lead to additional findings that these interactions were critical for homeostasis and were disrupted in disease. More recently, we have examined endothelial cell induced expression of microRNA miR145 in vascular smooth muscle cells and its role in the regulation and therapeutic potential of fibrotic cardiovascular disease.
