The Earth and Environmental Science Seminar Series presents: "Great Lakes water levels and coastal erosion - A new paradigm" with Dr. Jim Selegan, Hydraulic Engineer, Great Lakes Hydraulics and Hydrology Office | U.S. Army Corps of Engineers  - Detroit.

Abstract: The Lake Michigan shoreline has been eroding for thousands of years.  The sand supplied by this erosion has historically created wide beaches, protective foredunes and an abundant lakebed bar system.  More recently, however, the shoreline has had to respond to a changing sand supply due to shore protection structures and harbors.  We examined a reach of the Lake Michigan shoreline by collecting a variety of conventional and geophysical data sets to assess the state of erosion and will discuss the role that water levels and sand supply play in erosion.

Biography: Dr. Jim Selegean is a licensed engineer and hydrologist with over 26 years of experience with the Great Lakes Hydraulics and Hydrology Office of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in Detroit.  Dr. Selegean received his Ph.D. from Wayne State in Civil/Environmental Engineering in addition to a degree in aquatic ecology and currently oversees any Corps work that pertains to sediment.  This diversity has allowed him to work in both rivers and coastlines of the Great Lakes doing numerical modeling and extensive field data collection.  Jim has also been on the faculty in Wayne State’s Civil/Environmental Engineering Department for over ten years and currently te  aches two field methods classes in fluvial geomorphology.
