Ms. Music is a self-described "Detroitist". Growing up in her father's record business in Detroit, she became an activist in her early teens, during the social tumult of the late sixties, and later a labor union president. Through it all, she has been a writer; of acclaimed essays, poems and narratives about the city’s music, and its past and future. She has been recognized for her reframing of Detroit narratives, appearing in and performing voiceovers in numerous documentary films and podcasts on Detroit.

Ms. Music was a 2012 Kresge Literary Arts Fellow, a 2015 Knight Arts Challenge winner, and is co-producing a documentary film, Hastings Street Blues, with WSU Head of Media Arts Department, Juanita Anderson.
