Keith, a civil rights champion who served as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit since 1977, died Sunday, April 28, at the age of 96.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer ordered all U.S. and Michigan flags within the state Capitol complex and on all state buildings be lowered to half-staff on Monday in honor of Keith.

Wayne State University Law School’s Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights, dedicated in 2011, was named in honor of Keith, who earned a master of laws degree from the school in 1956.
