Brewing Chemistry: The Truth Behind Clean Labels

Presented by:
Dave McCall, Ph.D.,
Chemist, Ipax Atlantic

Clean label is not a scientific term. Rather, it is a consumer term that has been broadly accepted by the food industry, consumers, academics, and even regulatory agencies. There is no official definition of “clean labels”, but the term is generally interpreted to mean food formulations with shorter ingredient lists without artificial (synthetic) chemicals, and with familiar ingredients. Consumers want clean labels, and major food manufacturers, restaurants, and supermarkets are scrambling to provide them. But exactly what are they, and are they good for consumers and their health? Do they have downsides? Do clean labels result in meaningful changes, or are they just another marketing fad?
