The university community is invited to join the Division of Research for a special seminar with guest speaker, Kai Zhang, Ph.D.,assistant professor of Epidemiology, human genetics and environmental sciences in the School of Public Health at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

The seminar will be held on Wednesday, March 17, 2020 from 1 to 2 p.m. in the IBio Conference Center, Room 1D. Dr. Zhang will present, "Air Pollution, Disasters and Urban Exposome."

Dr. Zhang received a B.S. with honors in environmental engineering from Southeast University in Nanjing, China; a M.S. in environmental science and engineering from Tsinghua University in Beijing, China; and a Ph.D. in environmental health sciences and epidemiology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He was a research fellow in environmental health sciences and epidemiology prior to his position at the University of Texas.

Dr. Zhang's research focuses on characterizing climate-related exposures, reducing the human health effects associated with extreme weather events, and exploring the role of environmental stressors (air pollution, natural environment, built environment, and social environment) in the development of cardiovascular diseases and obesity. He has extensive experience in developing state-of-the-art models for assessing exposures to particulate matter, automotive emissions and climate change-related exposures. He has explored heat-related effects among vulnerable populations, particularly farmworkers. He research also focuses on investigating the health impact of environmental stressors in relation to the development of cardiovascular diseases and obesity.

ABSTRACT:

Urban populations face many environmental health challenges ranging from traditional pollutants to emergent issues such as natural disasters. This talk will focus on modern exposure science approaches to characterize exposures to particulate air pollution, natural disaster and urban exposome as well as to incorporate them in health research. These approaches include land use regression, GIS and remote sensing, machine and deep learning methods. The approaches highlighted throughout the talk are applicable to epidemiological studies, risk assessment and public health actions.
