"Seeking Asylum: What a Detroit Psychiatry Residency Taught Me About the Cost of 

Deinstitutionalization and the Failures of the Community Health Model"


  1. Provide a brief history of mental health treatment in the United States with a focus on state psychiatric facilities.
  2. Outline precipitants and causes of deinstitutionalization and forces that led to the development of the current community mental health care model.
  3. Identify systemic flaws in the community mental health care model that have led to inadequate care for the mentally ill in our communities.
