Title: Mathematics and the Calendar
Abstract: Irregularities in the calendar, such as leap years and months of differing lengths, complicate making plans for, say, next month. These irregularities clearly invite mathematical analysis. In the first part of the talk, I will discuss a mechanism based on easy mental arithmetic, which helps cope with these irregularities. The procedure can easily be adapted to work out the day of the week for any date in this century, or in other centuries, for that matter.
