Michelle Bourgeois, PhD, CCC-SLP
Professor, ASHA Fellow, and GSA Fellow Dept of Communication Sciences & Disorders University of South Florida, Tampa, FLFree and open to all.
The caregivers of persons with dementia range from family members trying to cope with the increasing demands of a degenerative disease trajectory in the home/community to professional caregivers in long term care settings. Clinicians need to understand the education, training, and support needs of different types of caregivers and the range of caregiver characteristics, the training and counseling options available, and the evidence and outcomes for these different caregiver approaches. This presentation will provide clinicians working with persons with dementia an overview of the types of resources available to caregivers with various needs to ensure improved quality of life outcomes for persons with dementia and their caregivers.
