TOPIC:
"Psychiatric Disorders During Pregnancy:
Weighing the Risks and Benefits of Psychiatric Mediations"
Description:
This presentation will focus on the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders in women during pregnancy. Specialized knowledge is necessary to assess the risks and benefits of treatments for psychiatric disorders during pregnancy, to optimize maternal mental health, and limit exposure to the baby in utero to both untreated psychiatric illnesses and to medication. Exposure to psychotropic medications and the consequence of untreated psychiatric disorders must be considered when treating pregnant women, those who may become pregnant during treatment. Up-to-date and comprehensive knowledge is required to help patients make collaborative and individualized treatment decisions. A strong understanding of the literature pertaining to the reproductive safety of medications is imperative to factor in potential risks and benefits of medications, and context is particularly critical in putting risks into perspective.
Objectives:
1. Analyze the risk of untreated psychiatric disorders during pregnancy.
2. Identify the data pertaining to exposure during pregnancy of commonly utilized psychiatric medications.
3. Assess the variables that must be considered in individual treatment decisions during pregnancy.
