Gino Panza, PhD, C.S.C.S., will present his work on "Daily intermittent hypoxia improves upper airway and cardiovascular function in participants with untreated obstructive sleep apnea and hypertension." Gino and colleagues investigated the therapeutic effects of daily intermittent hypoxia in a cohort of participants with untreated obstructive sleep apnea and hypertension. Their results show that daily exposure to mild intermittent hypoxia can improve upper airway function in these participants. Additionally, the improvement in upper airway function resulted in significant improvements in continuous positive airway pressure. Furthermore, daily exposure resulted in significant reductions in wakefulness and sleep blood pressure compared to control participants.
