The Treasure Rescue - Saving 40,000 Penguins from an Oil Spill Presented by: Dyan deNapoli, penguin expert

On June 23, 2000, an oil spill off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa threatened to kill nearly half of the global population of African penguins. 20,000 penguins were covered with oil, and another 20,000 were in the path of the rapidly approaching oil slick. The rescue effort that ensued was groundbreaking on many levels, and ultimately proved to be the largest and most successful animal rescue ever undertaken – and still stands as such to this day. Dyan deNapoli was a member of the first team of penguin experts that came from the US to help oversee the rehabilitation of the oiled penguins, which included managing many of the 12,500 inexperienced volunteers who came to the rescue centers to help feed, clean, and save the penguins. Dyan’s favorite story from this rescue involves a young science student, and a degreaser he had invented – a story that is sure to be appreciated by a group of chemists!

About: Dyan deNapoli is a penguin expert, TED speaker, and award-winning author. Her first book, The Great Penguin Rescue, chronicles her experiences helping to manage the rescue of 40,000 penguins from the Treasure oil spill in South Africa. Dyan shares her passion for penguin conservation with kids and adults of all ages, and is a frequent guest expert on radio, podcasts, and TV in the US and abroad, including for CNN and the BBC. Her favorite gig is as a guest lecturer for Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic on their voyages to Antarctica.

Brewing Chemistry is a monthly lectures series. These informal talks are designed to make science fun and accessible for all.
