Join Alex B. Hill ’16 for a Q&A discussion of his new book Detroit in 50 Maps!
A New York Times top book of 2021, Detroit in 50 Maps deconstructs the Motor City in surprising new ways, illustrating the locations of coffee shops and coworking spaces that have opened and closed, and pinpointing areas in Detroit with the highest concentrations of pizzerias, Coney Island hot dog shops, and ring-necked pheasants. In each colorful map, you'll find a new perspective on one of America’s most misunderstood cities and the people who live there.
Alex B. Hill is GIS Director at Wayne State University and Project Director of the Detroit Food Map Initiative, which has been mapping nutritional access of Detroit grocery stores, corner stores, and farmers markets since 2011. He started the website DETROITography (detroitography.com) in an attempt to bring together various Detroit cartographers and their great work. An alumnus of the Wayne State University Anthropology Master's program, Hill is currently a professor in the University's Department of Public Health. Alongside the Wayne State University Department of Urban Studies and Planning, Hill organizes an annual GIS Day.
To purchase the book: Detroit in 50 Maps is currently available from the publisher Belt Publishing or at other retailers including Amazon and Detroit’s own Pages Bookshop.
