Working with Young Transgender Children: Clinical and Ethical Considerations

Date: October 20, 2022
Time: 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Location: Zoom
Category: Training

The Wayne State University School of Social Work Office of Continuing Education is proud to host Clinical Social Worker Susan Radzilowski, MSW, LMSW, ACSW for this engaging session featuring highly interactive small group breakouts to explore case studies with fellow participants.

This seminar will offer a working definition of terms, including Transgender, Gender Identity, Gender Expression, Intersex, Gender Nonconforming, Non-Binary, Intersex, Gender Transition, and Ally. In addition, language and terminology will be examined to emphasize using affirming language and avoiding offensive terminology.

From a clinical and ethical lens, Radzilowski will examine concerns, risk factors, and barriers to care that impact the younger transgender child (12 and younger). These risk factors include lack of access to gender-affirming care, increased incidence of anxiety and depression, bullying, and social and familial rejection, all of which can exacerbate mental health issues. Radzilowski will focus on clinical interventions and explore ways to deliver evidence-based interventions from an ethical lens.

Radzilowski spent over twenty years working as a School Social Worker for Detroit Public Schools. Radzilowski is currently a Clinical Social Worker in a Child and Adolescent Gender Services program at a University based health system. She is also a Lecturer at the University of Michigan School of Social Work and a Part Time Faculty at Wayne State University. In 2018, Susan founded her private practice, Radzilowski Counseling, LLC, where she offers therapy and consultation. In her clinical practice Susan focuses on working with transgender clients, with a focus on working with transgender and gender diverse youth and their families.

Attendees can obtain 3 CE's upon completion of the training, payment receipt and passing of the post-training quiz. Learn more about additional trainings in this series.
