Abstract
Are financial capacity and financial exploitation assessments a gordian knot in geropsychology? The observed shift of the distribution of the global population towards older ages is accompanied by a number of challenges. As we grow older, major or minor cognitive impairments may appear as well as physical health problems and social issues. These biological, psychological, and social factors may place older adults at risk of financial fraud and/or abuse. Although financial capacity refers to the ability to manage one’s affairs in a way that is consistent with an individual’s self-interest and longstanding values, this type of assessment is still a taboo issue not only in Greece, but in many European countries, and no shared assessment protocols exist in order to assist healthcare professionals, legal experts and family members. I will describe a series of relevant studies focusing on the assessment of financial capacity in elderly in Greece and in addition to that, new questions for future research related to assessment of financial exploitation will be discussed.
