The Wayne State University School of Social Work Office of Continuing Education invites child welfare workers, family preservation workers, foster care workers and adoption services to attend one of our specialized child welfare trainings

Longwood University's Social Work Assistant Professor Erica Brown-Meredith, PhD will lead the training "Culturally Responsive Social Service Practices for Cross-Cultural Helping: Using an Antiracist Framework". Social service work is evolving into a paradigm where culturally relevant practices and “wokeness” are critical mandates in responsive practices for cross-cultural helping. There has been a “cancelling” of power differentials demanding changes to structural and institutional racism, which starts with the promotion of equity and inclusion in social service practice. The charge requires social service and child welfare workers to heighten awareness and understanding of how dynamics of difference and acceptance of difference are at the core of effective cross-cultural service delivery. This training will assist in further developing an approach for child welfare workers that conceptualizes cross-cultural work and promotes culturally relevant social service delivery. This training will utilize small and large group discussions and visual displays.

As a result of this training, attendees will be prepared to:

  • Analyze culturally competent skills areas in therapeutic relationships.
  • Recognize the impact of social, political, and racial attitudes in service delivery.
  • Define the developmental model of intercultural sensitivity and the continuum of cultural proficiency to promote culturally relevant child welfare case work.

Attendees can obtain 3 CE's upon completion of the training, payment receipt and passing of the post-training quiz. Spots are limited and preference will be given to child welfare workers. Cost: Free to all MDHHS and private agency child welfare workers; $15 students; $45 all others.

All attendees must RSVP by May 25, 2023 for this training. Attendees will receive the Zoom link upon completion of the RSVP.
