The Wayne State University School of Social Work Office of Continuing Education invites faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members to join WSU Social Work alum, Certified Peer Recovery Coach and Certified Peer Recovery Mentor Allison Herrst, LLMSW, CPRM, CPRC for the training "De-escalation Techniques for Behavioral Health Professionals".

Professionals working in behavioral health settings will likely be faced with difficult situations and clients in distress. Individuals who experience crises are often in need of services, and knowing how to support them can be challenging for many professionals. Whether you are a social worker, medical practitioner, psychologist, psychiatrist, or anyone working in the field, knowing how to handle these delicate situations is imperative. This training will help participants develop a comprehensive understanding of de-escalation techniques that can be used when working with vulnerable populations to help prevent a crisis from escalating. This course focuses on verbal de-escalation skills that can be utilized in multiple scenarios, including the workplace and in the community.

Learning objectives:

  • Participants will be able to identify crisis behavior and match this behavior with the appropriate staff intervention.
  • Participants will be able to recognize the different levels of verbal escalation and determine the appropriate staff response.

  • Participants will be able to develop a safety plan when working with individuals in crisis. They will be able to understand the importance of safety interventions to prevent crisis escalation.
  • Participants will learn how to reestablish a relationship with an individual after a crisis situation has occurred.
