Abstract: Molecular motors, like their macroscopic counterparts, convert fuel to waste and get useful work out in the process. However, these molecule-sized machines have to contend with large fluctuations at the nanoscale. In this talk, I will demonstrate with computer simulations how a simple artificial molecular motor uses turns these random fluctuations into directed motion. I will demonstrate how recent thermodynamic theories in conjunction with simulation results can measure entropy production and efficiency in these motor systems. Using simulations as a testing ground, I will show how computer modeling can be a critical tool in designing artificial motors. With lessons from this artificial system, I will discuss how we are attempting to understand the complex motor proteins at the heart of life through computer modeling.
