The Wayne State University School of Social Work Office of Continuing Education invites child welfare workers, family preservation workers, foster care workers and adoption services to attend one of our specialized child welfare trainingsWe are excited to host Kristen Carney, LMSW for this training titled "Self-care Strategies for Child Welfare Workers".

Due to the stress and demands in child welfare work, caseworkers and social work professionals are susceptible to experiencing burnout, compassion fatigue, and secondary traumatic stress. In this training, the presenter will define self-care and discuss the need for self-care tools in various levels of practice and social justice work. Participants will learn about the benefits of self-care such as mindfulness and meaningful connection and have an opportunity to practice foundational somatic skills for responding to distress with curiosity, compassion, and presence. This training will utilize exercises, small and large group discussion, and visual displays.

Kristen Carney is a licensed Clinical Social Worker, educator, and facilitator with certifications in somatic psychotherapy and perinatal mental health. Over the span of her career, Kristen has worked in various capacities in higher education, including Student Affairs and college counseling centers. She currently serves as an adjunct faculty at Wayne State University’s School of Social Work, works as a solo practitioner, and owns a therapy and consulting business, Marigold Mental Health, LLC where she supports women and nonbinary individuals in building healthy self perception, connection, and confidence.
