The Center for Leadership in Environmental Awareness and Research (CLEAR) is pleased to invite you to their Winter 2024 Science Communication Workshop on Friday, April 12, 2024 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon. The hybrid workshop will be held in-person at Wayne State's Integrative Biosciences Center - IBio - located at 6135 Woodward, Detroit, and virtually via Zoom. Our guest speaker will be Lance Gable, J.D., professor of law and faculty director of the Minor in Law Program at Wayne State University. He will present, "Regulating Volatile Organic Compounds: Environmental Health and the Law and Policy Landscape." 

Abstract:

The legal regulation of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) emissions is complicated, varied, and incomplete. Different products and sources of emissions are governed by different legal provisions, and in some cases may not be directly regulated at all – which makes enforcement complicated. Multiple levels of law and policymaking can be challenging to understand and may make solving problems and minimizing harm more difficult to address directly. This workshop will teach you the basics of VOC legal regulation and explore pathways for researchers and scientists to work with community members and policymakers to strengthen and improve laws and policies regulating VOCs.  

Biography:

Lance Gable is a professor of Law at the Wayne State University Law School, and faculty director of the Minor in Law Program. Gable, an internationally known expert on public health law and bioethics, served as interim dean of Wayne Law from September 2016 to August 2017.

His research addresses the overlap among law, policy, ethics, health and science. He has published books and journal articles on a diverse array of topics, including public health law, ethics and policy; international human rights; emergency preparedness and response; mental health; research ethics; and information privacy.

Gable holds a bachelor of arts degree in political science from Johns Hopkins University and master of public health degree from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He earned his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center.
