Event Description: The Wayne State University School of Social Work Continuing Education Office invites healthcare professionals to an enriching session aimed at enhancing their ability to provide culturally competent care to African American populations. This workshop will delve into the historical and contemporary challenges impacting healthcare access and shaping the experiences of African American individuals and communities. Attendees will gain practical, culturally responsive strategies to promote equity, build trust, and improve health outcomes.

Learning Objectives:

  • Demonstrate a deeper understanding of the historical and contemporary challenges impacting healthcare access and experiences for African American populations.
  • Apply culturally responsive strategies to promote equity, build trust, and improve health outcomes in healthcare settings serving African American individuals and communities.
  • Develop inclusive care plans that effectively address cultural barriers, fostering more empathetic and supportive healthcare environments for African American patients.

Featured Speaker: Dr. Nnodim Opara, a double-board certified physician and Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Wayne State University School of Medicine (WSUSOM), will lead this session. Dr. Opara serves as the Associate Program Director of the Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residency program and is the founding director of the "Health Equity and Justice in Medicine" curriculum, an innovative initiative addressing social and structural determinants of health through education, advocacy, and community engagement. She also co-directs the Global Urban Health & Equity curriculum (GLUE) and provides clinical care to underserved populations while mentoring residents and medical students in wellness, academic development, and health equity.

A passionate advocate for health equity and global health, Dr. Opara co-founded Africans in Medicine to unite African medical professionals and improve health outcomes in the African Diaspora. She has received multiple accolades for her leadership and dedication to culturally humble, patient-centered care, including the "Most Engaged Physician" and "Faculty of the Year" awards. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Dr. Opara is a proud wife and mother to three young daughters and enjoys music, dance, theater, and writing.

Continuing Education Credits:

  • Attendees can obtain 1.5 social work CECH upon completing the training, payment, quiz, and evaluation.
  • A downloadable CECH certificate will be available upon completion of all requirements.
  • Participants must attend the entire event to receive credit.

Cost:

  • 1.5 CECH credits are available for licensed social workers at $15.
