Empowered Defense: A Self-Defense Symposium
Presented by the COSW Gender & Equity Committee

Join us for an insightful symposium exploring diverse approaches to self-defense, featuring expert presenters and a moderated panel discussion. Each presenter will share a 20-minute presentation, followed by a 30-minute Q&A session led by the moderator, allowing the audience to engage with the speakers.

Event Highlights:
Dr. Marya C. McCarroll, Ph.D., L.P.
Clinical Psychologist & Associate Director, Wayne State Psychology Clinic
Dr. McCarroll will present Full-Force, Feminist Self-Defense, a topic she explored in her Master’s Thesis, The Influence of Safety Messages on Women’s Perception of Risk, Fear of Rape, and Precautionary Behaviors.

Heidi Sproull, LMSW, CST
Clinical Psychotherapist, Sex Therapist, Educator, & Self-Defense Instructor
With over 30 years of experience teaching self-defense for women, girls, and female-identified individuals, Heidi will share insights from her empowerment-based approach. She is also the author of Informed Adolescence, set to be released in March 2025.

Wayne State Alumna & MSW Candidate, University of Michigan
A dedicated advocate for violence prevention, Courtney will lead the panel discussion and audience Q&A.
