Empowering Change: The Role of Social Work in Social Justice and Advocacy

Join the Wayne State University School of Social Work for an inspiring event showcasing the transformative power of social work in advancing community change, social justice, and political action. For over 90 years, we have proudly served as Detroit’s Social Work School, collaborating with community leaders to drive meaningful change.
We invite you to join us for an interactive discussion designed to equip attendees with the tools, knowledge, and strategies to become effective advocates for justice and catalysts for societal transformation. This event will feature an engaging panel discussion and Q&A session, exploring:
- The pivotal role of macro social work in shaping policies.
- Strategies for fostering community empowerment.
- Practical approaches to driving political and systemic change.
The event will feature keynote speaker Former U.S. Senator from Michigan Debbie Stabenow and the following panel:
- Oakland County Commissioner Charlie Cavell, District 19
- Michigan State Senator Stephanie Chang
- Current Mayoral Candidate for the City of Detroit Saunteel Jenkins
- Detroit City Council Member Gabriela Santiago-Romero, District 6

Guests are invited to attend an Afterglow Event to continue the discussion with drinks and light refreshments with fellow attendees from 6:00 - 7:30 pm in the auditorium lobby space.

CONTINUING EDUCATION: One and a half (1.5 CECH) Social Work CE's are available to attendees for FREE. Pre-registration for CE's is required via the RSVP form. All attendees seeking CE's must sign-in and out, and stay for the full event duration. Attendees will be able to download their certificate upon completion of the event evaluation.
