Abstract

Cities are among mankind’s greatest innovations and yet they are fragile. Pandemics cause people to flee cities and poor governance leads to out-migration. This talk builds on a recent book by Cutler and Ed Glaeser, “Survival of the City,” analyzing the precarious nature of urban life and solutions to longstanding urban problems.

About David Cutler

David Cutler is the Otto Eckstein Professor of Applied Economics in the Department of Economics at Harvard University. He holds secondary appointments at the Kennedy School of Government and the School of Public Health at Harvard University and was associate dean of the faculty of arts and sciences for social sciences from 2003-2008. Professor Cutler has published over 200 articles in economics journals such as the "American Economic Review," "American Economic Journal: Economic Policy" and "Journal of Health Economics" as well as medical journals such as the "New England Journal of Medicine" and the "Journal of the American Medical Association."
