Event Description:

Like the first workshop, this workshop is designed to equip social workers with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide culturally competent care to clients from the Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) region. We hope that you can expand on the unique cultural, social, and historical contexts that shape the experiences of individuals and families from MENA communities. This workshop emphasizes practical strategies and real-life scenarios for enhancing cultural sensitivity and promoting inclusive practices in social work settings. As well as offer practical strategies to promote equity, build trust, and improve health outcomes. As you prepare, we encourage you to align your presentation with this theme. 

Learning Objectives:

  • Enhance Cultural Competency – Gain a deeper understanding of the cultural, social, and historical contexts influencing MENA populations.
  • Implement Inclusive Practices – Apply culturally responsive strategies to improve care and foster trust.
  • Navigate Cultural Dynamics – Strengthen skills in engaging with community members, healthcare providers, and policymakers to develop culturally appropriate interventions.
Speaker Bio:

Malak Kabalan earned her MS in Global Health from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Currently, she works as a Capacity Building Manager in Southeast Michigan. She manages projects that address social determinants of health and barriers preventing underserved populations from accessing health and social services. Her work includes advocacy, policy, research, and program development relating to the Middle Eastern North African (MENA) population and health equity. Her experience has led her to develop expertise in navigating cultural dynamics and collaborating with diverse stakeholders, including community members, healthcare providers, researchers, and policymakers, to develop effective interventions that promote health equity and well-being.

Continuing Education Credits:

  • Participants can earn 1.5 social work CECH credits upon completing the training, payment, quiz, and evaluation.
  • A downloadable CECH certificate will be available upon fulfilling all requirements.
  • Full attendance is required to receive credit.

Cost:

  • 1.5 CECH credits are available for licensed social workers at $20, FREE for students.
