The Wayne State University Physical Therapy Program cordially invites you to our 2025 Research Symposium. This symposium is eligible for two contact hours of continuing professional development.

The symposium will feature a keynote talk by Lori Quinn, PT, EdD, FAPTA, Professor of Movement Science and Kinesiology; Director of the Graduate Program in Motor Learning and Control; Chair of the Department of Biobehavioral Sciences; and Adjunct Associate Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine (Physical Therapy), Columbia University Irving Medical Center.

Dr. Quinn’s talk, titled "Meeting Patients Where They Are: Tailoring Physical Activity Coaching in Neurological Diseases," will focus on the application of physical activity (PA) coaching by physical therapists in the management of neurological conditions, such as Parkinson's disease (PD), Huntington's disease (HD), and cerebellar ataxia. PA coaching, grounded in self-determination theory, aims to promote long-term PA uptake by addressing psychological needs like autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Evidence from studies on PA coaching demonstrates its feasibility and potential efficacy in improving PA levels, exercise self-efficacy, and goal achievement in individuals with these conditions. A consultative approach with early integration of PA coaching may help delay neurodegeneration and improve patient outcomes.

The keynote will be followed by light refreshments and platform research presentations by the graduating class of Doctor of Physical Therapy students.

Event Schedule:

  • Keynote Address: 4:00–5:00 PM
  • Light Refreshments and Socializing: 5:00–5:30 PM
  • Student Research Presentations (Three Concurrent Sessions): 5:30–7:00 PM

We look forward to seeing you at the symposium!
