First Fridays in Anthropology are inviting, accessible introductions to anthropological research, with a focus on the significance of anthropology for the public. Invite your colleagues, friends and family — these talks are meant to be accessible to a broad audience.
For this event, we welcome Drs. Rose Wellman, Associate Professor of Anthropology, and Amny Shruaydi of U of M Dearborn.
Marriage, Islam, and Intimate Relations: Building Family and Community in Arab Detroit
Drs. Wellman and Shuraydi discuss how Arab American Muslims in metro Detroit navigate marriage amidst the challenges of U.S. imperial violence, anti-Muslim racism and neoliberal values. Through ethnographic research, the study examines how Arab American Muslims strive to build successful relationships and strengthen their communities in the face of ongoing imperial violence and systemic challenges.
