Please join Wayne State University's Center for Leadership in Environmental Awareness and Research (CLEAR) and Center for Urban Responses to Environmental Stressors (CURES) for their upcoming seminar on December 11, 2025 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. The seminar is free; registration is required. The meeting will be held via Zoom. The Zoom link will be emailed to all registrants prior to the seminar.

The speaker will be Dr. Sheena Elizabeth Martenies, assistant professor of health and kinesiology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She will present "Connecting neighborhood and children's health."

Abstract

Children, more than adults, are vulnerable to the effects of environmental exposures as they grow. Exposures like air pollution and social stressors, which can be measured at the home, school, and neighborhood level, likely have both individual and joint impacts on several children’s health outcomes. In this talk, I’ll discuss some of my recent work exploring how I have used spatial data sets and to explore the relationships between environmental exposures across several domains and children’s health and how my recent work has led me to new questions about how we can use these data to guide public health research.

Biography

Dr. Martenies received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from San Diego State University, a Master of Public Health with a concentration in Environmental Health Science and Policy from the The George Washing University School of Public Health and Health Services, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Health Sciences from the University of Michigan School of Public Health. She was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences from Colorado State University, where is currently an associate affiliate. She is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Health and Kinesiology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
