Stress Sensitivity and Substance Use in Adolescence
Adolescents often use substances for varied reasons including to cope with stress. This talk will discuss emerging evidence that one's sensitivity to daily stress--with respect to both emotional and physiological responses--relates to aspects of substance use (e.g., experimentation, binge drinking, coping motives) in middle and late adolescence. Implications of family support and belonging for substance use prevention will be discussed.

Dr. Rahal's research is broadly focused on understanding the daily experiences of racially and socioeconomically diverse youth throughout development. He employs psychobiological measures to examine how marginalization, with respect to being treated as and feeling of lower status, can negatively impact on health, with a focus on alterations in stress processes as one pathway.
