Join us for Alumni Voices: The Effects of Shiftwork and Burnout in Medicine

We invite you to attend an upcoming Alumni Voices webinar focused on the critical effects of shiftwork and burnout among physicians.

This session features insights from Chris Allen, M.D. ’09, a Wayne State University School of Medicine alumnus and expert in sleep medicine. The conversation will be moderated by Mary Tanski, M.D. ’09, and will explore the following key objectives:

  • Understand the physiological and cognitive consequences of shiftwork, including how disrupted circadian rhythms affect sleep, alertness, and long-term health.
  • Recognize the signs and stages of physician burnout, and how sleep deprivation intensifies emotional exhaustion and reduces empathy.
  • Discuss evidence-based strategies to reduce fatigue and support recovery — from sleep hygiene and scheduling adjustments to institutional interventions.
  • Explore real-world approaches to building resilience in healthcare professionals through culture change, prioritizing rest, and promoting mental health awareness.
