This training provides an in-depth exploration of ethical principles and professional standards in healthcare practice. Participants will examine the role of the counselor as both a person and a professional, learn to navigate complex ethical dilemmas, and strengthen their ability to uphold professionalism in diverse clinical settings.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of codes of ethics and their application.
  • Explain the counselor’s dual role as a person and professional.
  • Apply core bioethical principles in decision-making.
  • Recognize and maintain professionalism in healthcare.
  • Differentiate between boundary crossings and boundary violations.
  • Identify therapist and patient factors that contribute to boundary violations.
  • Implement steps to reduce professional liability.
  • Apply ethical principles when working with special populations.

About the Presenter:
Tehmina Shakir, MD, is a child and adolescent psychiatrist and assistant clinical professor at Wayne State University Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences. She also serves as Medical Director at Cruz Clinic. Dr. Shakir has received additional training and certifications in treating survivors of trauma, abuse, neglect, and human trafficking; juveniles with a history of sexual misconduct; and individuals with chronic conditions. She is a certified compassion fatigue professional and certified first responder counselor. She has been awarded diplomate status with the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress. As a Certified Chronic Care Professional, she has worked with treatment teams to develop principles of trauma-informed integrated behavioral health with primary care and pediatrics. Dr. Shakir is committed to educating professionals in traumatic stress (including childhood trauma and human trafficking), women’s health across the lifespan, and youth with histories of sexual misconduct.

Continuing Education:
Three (3) Social Work CE credits are available to attendees for FREE. Pre-registration for CE credits is required via the RSVP form. All attendees seeking CE credits must sign in via the link posted in the chat and stay for the full event duration. Certificates will be available upon completion of the event quiz and evaluation.

The Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training - Children, Adolescents, and Young Adult (BHWET-CAY) Program for Professionals, training MSW and PMHNP students to increase the supply and distribution of behavioral health providers in rural and underserved communities to address the behavioral health needs of children, adolescents, and young adults (ages 16-25). BHWET-CAY is funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).
