Join Detroit Opera for a series of free community events leading up to The Handmaid’s Tale. On Feb. 10, attend Community Voices on The Handmaid’s Tale: Control, Choice, and Resistance from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Wayne State University's Schaver Music Recital Hall (480 W. Hancock St., Detroit).
Moderator for the event will be Simone Chess, Director of WSU's Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies Program, and Associate Professor of English.
Panelists from Wayne State include:
- Dr. Jack Blaszkiewicz, Associate Professor, Music History
- Kevin Deegan-Krause, Professor, Political Science
- Sylvia Taschka, Professor of Teaching, Department of History
Discussions will explore key themes from the opera — including female disempowerment, reproductive rights, and control — examining how patriarchal systems use religious extremism and political power to oppress women, as well as themes of survival, memory, and resistance.
