From the Home to the City: Rethinking Aging-in-Place with Spatial Justice
by
Leiha Edmonds
Geography and Human Biology, Indiana University Bloomington
This talk reframes aging-in-place through collective care and spatial justice, examining how neighborhood conditions, historic inequities, and mutual aid and care networks shape later-life wellbeing. Drawing on case studies from elder-led neighborhood initiatives in North Carolina, I show how place-based coalitions are redefining the social and infrastructural supports that enable aging-in-community. Together, these examples illustrate how collaborative, community-anchored strategies can address the structural and environmental determinants of aging and advance more expansive understandings of aging-in-place.
